Abstract

Excavations at the Neolithic settlement of Çatalhöyük in central Turkey reveal a densely packed urban layout with houses entered from the roof and elaborate interior decoration including wall paintings and plaster reliefs of wild animals. This paper examines how the spatial organization of the settlement reflects social structures based on household histories rather than kinship hierarchies.

Published in Cambridge Archaeological Journal (2006), this peer-reviewed paper contributes to scholarly understanding of ancient civilizations and archaeological methodology.
