Carved approximately 11,600 years ago, the pillar depicts a vulture holding a disc, a headless figure, a scorpion, and other animals in a scene that engineers Martin Sweatman and Dimitrios Tsikritsis argue encodes a specific date: the summer solstice of 10,950 BCE — within 250 years of the onset of the Younger Dryas catastrophe. Using stellarium software to match the animal figures to constellations in their positions at that epoch, they propose that the pillar records a cometary impact event that devastated Earth at the end of the Ice Age. The headless figure may represent mass death. The disc may represent the impacting object. A separate carved symbol on the pillar shows the Earth tilting on its axis. If the interpretation is correct, the builders of Gobekli Tepe deliberately encoded a warning — or a memorial — for the most catastrophic event in post-Ice Age human experience, carved into stone so that the memory could never be lost. The paper was published in Mediterranean Archaeology and Archaeometry in 2017 and has generated both support and pushback from archaeoastronomers and prehistorians.
