Scattered across the Xiangkhouang Plateau of northern Laos, more than 2,100 massive stone jars sit in clusters across over 90 sites — some carved from sandstone, others from granite or conglomerate, ranging from one to three meters tall and weighing up to 14 tons. The jars were produced by an unknown Iron Age culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE, and their purpose has never been conclusively determined. Local Lao legend attributes them to a race of giants who used them to brew rice wine. Archaeologists have found human remains, beads, and ceramic grave goods nearby, suggesting funerary practices — possibly exposure burial, where bodies were placed inside the jars to decompose before bone collection. However, many jars show no evidence of burial use. The quarries from which the stone was cut have been identified kilometers from the jar sites, raising the same transport questions that haunt megalithic monuments elsewhere. Decades of unexploded ordnance from American bombing during the Vietnam War era have made many sites too dangerous to excavate, leaving the Plain of Jars one of the least studied major archaeological landscapes in Southeast Asia.
